There’s something about fall that makes it easy to let healthy habits slip.
The mornings get cooler, the days get shorter, and before you know it, you’re choosing the couch over your evening walk.
If that sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone.
The good news? Fall is actually one of the best times of year to build (or rebuild) a consistent fitness routine. The temperatures are comfortable, the trails are beautiful, and it’s the perfect season to establish habits before the busy holiday season arrives.
Here are my favourite ways to stay active in Ottawa this fall.
1. Take Advantage of the Cooler Weather
If summer workouts left you feeling hot and exhausted, fall is your season.
The cooler temperatures make walking, running, hiking, and cycling much more enjoyable. Even a 30-minute walk after work can do wonders for your physical and mental health.
Don’t underestimate the power of simply getting outside.

2. Explore Ottawa’s Beautiful Trails
One of my favourite things about living in Ottawa is how many amazing outdoor spaces we have.
Take advantage of places like:
- Ottawa River Pathway
- Rockcliffe Park
- Dominion Arboretum
- Greenbelt Trails
- Hog’s Back Park
Changing your scenery can make your workout feel completely different—even if you’re doing the exact same walk.
3. Dress for Success
One of the biggest reasons people stop exercising outdoors is because they aren’t dressed comfortably.
A few simple tips:
- Dress in lightweight layers.
- Wear reflective clothing if you’re exercising after work.
- Choose proper footwear for wet leaves and uneven trails.
- Don’t forget gloves and a light hat once the temperatures begin to drop.
When you’re comfortable, you’re much more likely to stick with your routine.
4. Keep Strength Training on Your Schedule
Walking is fantastic, but don’t forget about strength training!
Building muscle helps improve your metabolism, supports healthy aging, strengthens your bones, and makes everyday activities easier.
Even two strength workouts each week can make a significant difference.
5. Make Movement Social
One of the easiest ways to stay consistent? Don’t do it alone.
- Meet a friend for a walk instead of coffee.
- Bring your family to the park.
- Join a fitness class.
When movement becomes part of your social life, it stops feeling like another item on your to-do list.
6. Don’t Wait Until January
This is the mindset shift I encourage all of my clients to make. So many people think:
“I’ll start after Thanksgiving.”
Then it becomes, “I’ll wait until after Christmas.”
Then suddenly it’s January, and they’re trying to build momentum from scratch.
The best time to build healthy habits is before life gets busier, not after.

7. Have an Indoor Backup Plan
Let’s be honest, some fall days are cold, rainy, and windy. Instead of skipping your workout entirely, have a Plan B.
Maybe it’s:
- A strength workout at the studio
- A quick home workout
- A treadmill walk
- A mobility session
Consistency isn’t about perfection, it’s about adapting.
8. Focus on Consistency, Not Intensity
This might be the most important tip of all.
You don’t have to crush every workout. Some days you’ll feel strong. Some days you’ll simply go for a walk. Both count.
The people who see lasting results aren’t usually the ones doing the hardest workouts—they’re the ones who keep showing up.
Fall Is the Perfect Time to Build Momentum
Fitness doesn’t have to wait until January. In fact, starting now means you’ll head into the holidays feeling stronger, more energized, and more confident.
Whether you enjoy walking Ottawa’s beautiful trails, strength training a couple of times each week, or simply moving your body a little more each day, remember that every step counts.
