One of the questions I get asked all the time is, “Do I have to work out in a gym to get results?”
My answer?
Absolutely not.
Don’t get me wrong… I love strength training, and there’s a reason we do it at Prime Personal Training. But movement doesn’t have to happen inside four walls. Some of my favourite workouts happen outside, where I can enjoy fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a change of pace.
Whether you’re looking for a peaceful walk, a challenging hike, or the perfect place to squeeze in a quick bodyweight workout, Ottawa East has no shortage of incredible outdoor spaces.
Here are a few of my favourites.
1. Ottawa River Pathway
This is one of my favourite places to walk or jog. The river views are beautiful, the paths are well maintained, and you can easily turn a simple walk into an interval workout by alternating between brisk walking and jogging.
Try this: Walk for 3 minutes, jog for 1 minute, and repeat for 30–40 minutes.
2. Rockcliffe Park
If you’re looking for a little more challenge, Rockcliffe Park has rolling hills that naturally increase the intensity of your workout.
Walk the hills, enjoy the views, and don’t forget to pause and appreciate the scenery. Fitness should be something you enjoy, not something you rush through.
3. Dominion Arboretum
This is one of Ottawa’s hidden treasures.
Wide pathways, mature trees, and peaceful surroundings make it the perfect place for a long walk, mobility work, or a recovery day when you simply need to move your body without pushing yourself too hard.
4. Green’s Creek Conservation Area
Want to get your heart rate up?
Green’s Creek offers forested trails with hills, uneven terrain, and enough variety to challenge your balance, coordination, and endurance.
Nature provides a pretty great gym.
5. Stanley Park
This is an ideal spot for a quick outdoor circuit.
Find a bench and try this:
- 15 Squats
- 10 Incline Push-ups
- 20 Walking Lunges
- 30-Second Plank
Repeat 3–5 times, then finish with a walk around the park.
6. Rideau Canal Pathways
The Rideau Canal isn’t just beautiful in the winter.
During the warmer months, it’s one of the best places in the city for walking, running, cycling, or simply getting your daily steps in while enjoying the water.
7. Vincent Massey Park
This park has plenty of open green space, paved pathways, and shaded areas that make it a great place for everything from family walks to resistance band workouts.
Bring a mat and enjoy a full-body workout outdoors.
8. NCC Greenbelt Trails
When you want to disconnect from your busy day, these trails are hard to beat.
The variety of trail lengths means there’s something for every fitness level, whether you’re looking for a leisurely walk or a more challenging hike.
9. Hog’s Back Park
Between the waterfalls, stairs, and walking paths, this park naturally lends itself to interval training.
Walk the trails, climb the stairs, recover, and repeat. It’s simple, effective, and never boring.
10. Manor Park
I couldn’t finish this list without mentioning the neighbourhood we call home.
One of the things I love most about Manor Park is that it makes movement easy. Quiet streets, nearby parks, and access to beautiful pathways mean you don’t have to drive across the city just to get outside.
Sometimes the best workout starts right outside your front door.
Remember: It Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
One of the biggest misconceptions about fitness is that every workout has to be intense to “count.”
The truth is, consistency beats intensity every time.
- A 30-minute walk.
- A hike with friends.
- A bodyweight workout at the park.
- A bike ride with your family.
They all count.
The goal isn’t to find the “perfect” workout. It’s to find movement you actually enjoy, because that’s the kind you’ll stick with.
So the next time the weather is beautiful, skip the treadmill, head outside, and explore one of these amazing Ottawa spots.
Your mind and your body will thank you.
See you outside!
Les
